"I have no bad memories of the Mini..."
Rauno Aaltonen: European Rally Champion 1965, winner of the Monte Carlo 1967, both in works Mini Coopers. "I don't have any bad memories of the Mini compared to other cars I drove. If there was ever a problem with the Mini, we knew we would come back next time and win." - Rauno on his fond memories of the Mini. "I gave it everything I had and took all the bends flat out in fourth gear going downhill. All was fine until I felt the car sliding on ice under the snow. We shot off the road and I remember seeing the headlights shining on the trees. We fell onto the side of the mountain and I managed to steer between the snow-covered boulders as we sped downhill. The car jumped a snowbank and landed on the road a few hundred metres below where we had left it. We were facing the wrong way so I handbraked the car round and raced on to the end of the stage, winning the rally by 12 seconds. We kept very quiet about this at the time as taking a shortcut, even by mistake, was illegal!" - Rauno on how to get ahead, or not, on rally stages.
