50 Years of Marcos

Thursday 30th April 2009

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of this legendary British sportscar, Marcos Heritage and the Marcos Owners Club are organising the largest collection of Marcos cars ever assembled at the Prescott Hill Climb course on Sunday 16 August 2009.

The first Mini based Marcos appeared in 1965 when Marcos owner Jem Marsh desided to build a GT car based on Mini running gear. The car went through several iterations from Mk1-Mk6, with the latter still being on sale today.

The Mini Marcos famously entered the LeMans 24 hour race in 1966 and finished an amazing 15th overall with a 1287cc Cooper S engine. In 1967, a racing Mini Marcos was clocked at 141mph on the Mulsanne Straight in its next LeMans outing! The aerodynamic bodywork and lightweight fibreglass shell made this possible, and no doubt a very tall final drive ratio would have also been used.

On 16 August, Marcos owners will have a chance to run the hillclimb, and take part in a cavalcade. Interest has already been expressed by motorsport legends the likes of Sir Jackie Stewart, Jackie Oliver, Derek Bell and numerous others, all of whom drove Marcos cars to great effect in their early careers.

Marcos founder Jem Marsh and designers Dennis and Peter Adams together with other notable figures will also be present. For more information visit the Marcos Owners Club website
